What food safety software means for restaurants in London

5,732 food businesses on the FSA register in Westminster alone — one borough, not the whole capital (16 September 2026). Source: FSA Food Hygiene Rating Scheme open data. That count is every premises on the register — restaurants, takeaways, pubs, shops — not restaurants only.
Who inspects food businesses in London
The London borough you trade in (32 boroughs plus the City of London) is the food authority. Officers are local. The pack is national. Search current ratings on the FSA London list. Official guidance: Search a local authority area — London.
Search ratings by borough on the FSA London directory. Officers still look at how food is handled, the premises, and how you manage food safety — for an SFBB kitchen that means opening and closing checks, temperatures, deliveries, and the 4-weekly review for the dates they name. Display of the 0–5 sticker is still voluntary in England. We do not claim any borough endorsement, FSA approval, or Primary Authority status.
In England, displaying the 0–5 sticker is still voluntary. Guests should also check the FSA register. The diary on site is a separate duty from the sticker on the door.
What kitchens in London actually look like
London kitchens are not one type. Basement Soho rooms, hotel banqueting, Borough Market traders, delivery-only dark kitchens in industrial parks, and neighbourhood pubs in Hackney all sit under different borough teams. A group with a site in Camden and another in Westminster has two inspectors, two Food Hygiene Rating Scheme records, and two places a manager must be able to unlock the diary. Treating “London” as one council is how area managers bring the wrong pack to the visit.
Neighbourhoods this page is written against: Westminster, Camden, Southwark, Hackney, City of London.
Why the paper pack fails on this city’s pattern
Late licences, split shifts, and agency chefs are the London pattern. The pack often lives in the office while the pass is still plating after midnight. Opening checks written up from memory on the night bus are the capital’s version of “we’ve always done the diary at close.” Delivery-only sites add another failure: there is no front-of-house drawer, so if the diary is not on the phone already in the kitchen, it is not on site when the officer walks in.
Paper is legal. It collapses when the pack is filled in late, left off site, or cannot be read. That habit is national. The trigger in London is local — the service pattern above, not a city-name swap.
What the officer still asks to see
Format is not the test. Records still have to be complete, dated, and accessible. For Safer Food, Better Business that usually means:
- Opening and closing checks
- Fridge, freezer, cooking, and hot-holding temperatures
- Delivery acceptance
- The 4-weekly review and the safe methods, not only the diary pages
FSA lists an electronic diary as an option in England and Wales. Safer food, better business (SFBB), GOV.UK, 5 June 2025.

Other UK city pages
Each page names a different food authority and a different kitchen pattern. If two pages would read the same after you swap the city, we do not publish the second one.
